Heat pump servicing in Tauranga
If we installed your heat pump, we'll keep it running clean and quiet. Regular servicing matters more here than most places, thanks to the salt air off the harbour.
A heat pump service means a proper filter and coil clean, a gas pressure check, and a look over the drainage and electrics. In Tauranga's salt air and humidity, doing it yearly stops corrosion, mustiness and weak heating before they cost you.
What's included in a heat pump service
A service is more than a quick wipe of the filters. We work through the whole unit so it heats hard, runs quiet and doesn't turn into a mould factory over a damp Tauranga winter.
Here's what we check and clean on a standard visit.
- Filter clean and gas check, so the unit isn't starved of airflow or short on refrigerant
- Indoor coil and barrel fan cleaned to clear mould and that musty smell
- Outdoor coil rinsed and inspected for salt corrosion
- Drain line flushed so condensate doesn't back up and drip
- Electrical connections and mounting checked, and a quick performance test
Salt air and your outdoor unit
Out at Mount Maunganui, Papamoa Beach and Arataki, the outdoor unit cops salt-laden air every day. That salt eats into the coil fins and fixings, and a corroded coil loses efficiency long before it fails outright. A regular rinse and inspection slows that right down.
If your place is right on the harbour or ocean front, the unit really wants to be a salt-air rated model to begin with. That's a choice made at install time, so if you're weighing up types of heat pump for a coastal home, it's worth getting the specification right. We cover this when we quote a new heat pump installation, and the same care applies whether you're after heating or air conditioning in Tauranga through summer.
We service the heat pumps we installed
Straight up: we only service and repair heat pumps we installed ourselves. We don't take on other companies' installs, because we know exactly how ours were sized, wired and mounted, and we stand behind that work.
If your unit was fitted by someone else and it's never quite heated the place, the honest fix is often a right-sized replacement rather than chasing faults on a job we didn't do. We're happy to quote that. A tidy, correctly sized install beats grunt or a cheap sticker price every time, and you can weigh up the heat pump installation cost before you commit. For whole-home heating we also fit ducted heat pump systems, and we install Daikin heat pumps among other brands.
Servicing across the Tauranga suburbs
We look after our customers from Bayfair and Matua through to Papamoa Beach. Older suburb retrofits are the ones we see most often overdue, where the original unit has run years without a proper clean and the heating has quietly dropped off.
If we put your heat pump in and it's due, book a heat pump service and we'll sort a time. Not sure whether it's a service or a repair? Tell us what it's doing and we'll steer you right.

Common questions about heat pump servicing
How often should a heat pump be serviced?
Once a year suits most Tauranga homes, ideally heading into autumn before you lean on it for winter. Coastal places near Mount Maunganui or Papamoa cop more salt and often want a look more often. If yours runs hard for both heating and cooling, yearly is the minimum.
How much does a heat pump service cost?
A standard service is usually a few hundred dollars, and it varies with the unit, how many you have and how far gone the clean is. A neglected unit that needs a deep coil and fan clean takes longer than one kept up to date. We'll give you a price before we start, not a surprise after.
Can I clean my heat pump filters myself?
You can and you should. Pop the front cover, slide the filters out, rinse them under the tap, let them dry and slot them back in every few weeks over the busy months. That handles airflow, but it doesn't reach the coil, barrel fan or drain, which is where the mould and gas issues live. That part needs a full service.
Why does my heat pump smell musty?
That musty smell is mould and damp built up on the indoor coil and fan, and Tauranga's humidity gives it plenty to feed on. Filter cleaning won't shift it because it's deeper in the unit. A proper clean of the coil and barrel fan clears it, and running the unit on fan or dry mode for a bit after heating helps keep it from coming back.
