Heat Pump Installation Tauranga
We install heat pumps across Tauranga and Mount Maunganui, sized for the room and fitted to last a coastal winter. Straight advice, tidy work, and we stand behind it.
Heat pump installation in Tauranga means sizing the unit to your room, mounting it where it heats evenly and fights damp, and running the pipework neatly. A single split usually takes half a day. We install across the Bay of Plenty and back our own work.
What a proper install actually involves
The unit on the wall is the easy bit. Getting it right starts with sizing. A heat pump that's too small runs flat out and never warms the room, and one that's too big short-cycles and costs more to run. Right sizing beats brand or grunt every time, so we measure the room, the glazing and the insulation before we quote anything. If you want to sanity-check the numbers yourself, our heat pump sizing calculator gives you a rough guide.
On the day we mount the indoor and outdoor units, run the copper pipework and drain, wire it in through a registered electrician, then vacuum and test the system before we hand it over. A clean install matters more than the sticker price. Loose brackets, kinked pipe or a lazy drain line are what cause the callouts down the track.
Older Tauranga bungalows versus new builds
The single-glazed bungalows around Ōtūmoetai and Greerton are a different job to a modern insulated home. Plenty of them have no fixed heating at all, so the room leaks heat through the windows and holds damp through winter. Placement is what fights that. Put the unit where the airflow reaches the cold corners and it dries the room out as it heats.
New builds in Pyes Pā and Papamoa hold their heat, so you often need less capacity than people expect. If you're doing a bigger place or want the whole house even, it's worth looking at ducted heat pump systems before you settle on a wall unit in every room. There's a rundown of the types of heat pump to help you weigh high-wall, floor and ducted options.
Beach-front sites and salt air
If you're near the water at Mount Maunganui or Papamoa Beach, salt air will eat a standard outdoor unit. We fit corrosion-resistant models built for coastal exposure and position them out of the worst of the spray where we can. It costs a bit more up front, but it saves you replacing a rusted-out unit years early.
We cover the whole city and out to the surrounding suburbs. Check the areas we cover if you're not sure we reach you.
Supply and install, and what it costs
We supply and install as one job, so you get one price and one crew that owns the result. What you pay depends on the unit, the room and how tricky the run is between indoor and outdoor units. A straightforward high-wall in an accessible spot is at the cheaper end; a long pipe run or an awkward two-storey site adds to it. We break down the installation cost so there are no surprises.
If you're on a limited income or hold a Community Services Card, the Warmer Kiwi Homes grant may cover most of a heat pump in your main living area. You apply through EECA directly, and we can fit an approved unit once you're sorted.

Common questions about heat pump installation
How long does it take to install a heat pump?
A single high-wall heat pump usually takes about half a day. If the pipe run is long, the site is two-storey, or we're fitting a multi-split or ducted system, it can stretch to a full day or more. We'll tell you what to expect before we start.
Where is the best place to put a heat pump in your house?
The best spot is a wall in the main living area where the airflow can reach the whole room, ideally away from a corner that traps it. In our humid winters, good placement also helps dry out damp instead of leaving cold, condensation-prone pockets. The outdoor unit needs airflow and, near the coast, some shelter from salt spray.
Do I need a building consent for a heat pump?
Most standard heat pump installs don't need a building consent, since they're covered as minor work. The electrical side must be done by a registered electrician. If your install involves structural changes, always check with Tauranga City Council first.
Can a heat pump be installed in any room?
In theory yes, but some rooms make more sense than others. Living areas and open-plan spaces get the most out of a heat pump. Small closed rooms like bedrooms need a smaller unit so it doesn't short-cycle, and any room needs a clear spot on an outside-facing wall for the pipework to reach the outdoor unit.
